She, instead, burned with a vision.

At 18, Xara left home with a backpack and a sketchpad, and $200 in her pocket and started crashing on couches anywhere from Berlin to Bangkok while interning for aerospace start-ups where payment was in coffee and Wi-Fi passwords. She slept in bunk beds on all the traveler websites and hitch hiked to a boondoggle conference and once bartered a hand-sketched Mars colony plan for a ticket to a NASA lecture.

Where the stars really aligned for her was when she fake crashed a high-profile symposium on Space Development ("borrowed" her colleagues badge, but lets call it strategic networking). It was there she cornered a lead engineer from SpaceX with her radical design for a low-gravity greenhouse— sketched out on a napkin. He hired her on the spot.
